It’s hard to believe that old man winter is here once again. It’s only November, which means that it’s only the beginning — the weather is just going to get colder, icier, and snowier from here! You want to protect your home from that ice-cold winter wind and any other seasonal surprises that come your way.
At Casa Bella Windows & Doors, we care about our customers. We want you to feel safe and warm throughout the winter season. We’ve compiled a preparation checklist of things you need to do before the stormy weather starts to brew. Casa Bella has been in the business for 60 years, manufacturing and installing windows and doors in Mississauga and the surrounding area, so we know a thing or two about getting homes ready for winter. Before you begin the winter hibernation, read through our tips on preparing your house for the chilly season.
1. Clean Out the Gutters
Everything in your house is connected — from the windows to the back porch, all the way to the gutters. The gutters protect the foundation of your home by keeping any unwanted water away from the house itself. They also prevent erosion and your basement from flooding. If you don’t clean them out throughout the year, they’ll get overloaded with leaves and debris. You’ll risk damaging your home’s foundation and potentially flooding the basement.
Cleaning out the gutters is a great activity to do this month. You’ll want to avoid doing it when it gets too cold or windy because it’s a little time-consuming. Get yourself a ladder, wear a thick pair of gardening gloves, and scoop out all of the material that’s in the gutters into a garbage bag. Use a hose to wash the rest of the debris away from your home. Although it takes a little effort, cleaning out the gutters before winter is crucial. The last thing you’ll need is a flood when it’s well below freezing outside.
2. Seal Your Driveway
By regularly sealing your driveway with an affordable sealant, you’re protecting it from potentially severe damage that could cost you a lot of money down the line. It’s particularly beneficial to seal the driveway now before the harsh weather hits. You’ll want to shield it from water and cold weather damage. Sealing the driveway also protects it from UV sun rays and repeals oil spills and leaks.
Wait for a nice, sunny day before you start the job because you’ll want the sealant to dry as quickly as possible with the help from the sun. Ensure you have a high-quality product, concrete filler, and a wide broom to sweep the driveway down with the sealant. First, fill in any cracks with concrete and let that sit. Follow your sealant’s instructions, and then wait a few hours for it to dry.
3. Insulate Your Windows
As you might imagine, windows are our passion here at Casa Bella. When you find the right style for your home you want to keep those windows in place, and most importantly, maintain a warm home all winter long. If you’re a Casa Bella customer, you’ll already have energy-efficient windows that use Low-emissivity (known as Low-E) glass that blocks harmful UV rays and locks the heat inside the home. We also utilize the power of Warm Edge Spacer and Super Spacer™ technology. Such methods block the heat escape plan in your home and provide the industry’s best thermal performances.
