When looking to replace windows and doors, most people tend to focus primarily on the features and minor details of the products and overlook the importance of the installation. The correct installation of replacement windows and doors is just as important as the right product. It is almost impossible to get the full energy efficiency benefits and the full enjoyment of your new replacement windows and doors if they are not installed properly. Untrained installation crews and poor workmanship can result in a stressful, messy and worry filled renovation experience.
Worst Case Scenario:
Imagine finding out that your installers forgot to insulate properly and you now have terrible drafts in the winter. Imagine investing in high quality windows and doors that don’t operate properly and look terrible due to improper installation. Imagine one of the installers gets injured on your property and decides to sue you. Imagine having a lien placed on your house by an installer who has a dispute with the window and door supplier. Imagine having carpets and property damaged by careless installers.
These are just some of the potential troubles that can arise during the installation of your new windows and doors. Nobody wants or needs the worry of these kinds of problems. Here are some tips to help you avoid installation related problems and ensure you get the best installation possible.
Are They Qualified?
Always look for companies that employ installers who are specialized in renovation installations versus new construction, and are highly skilled in trim carpentry with good construction practices. The installation process for replacement windows and doors is different to that of new construction installation. In addition to installing the windows and doors, a replacement installer must be careful not to damage flooring and furniture, properly insulate any gaps between the frame and the structure, seal to the existing vapour barrier, air and water seal the exterior with caulking, install the interior trim and clean up all work areas. New construction installers do not have to do any of this.
Are They Insured?
Be careful of companies that use subcontractors to install their windows and doors. Before any work begins, be sure to get proof of proper WSIB (workers’ compensation) and insurance liability coverage of at least $2 million dollars by both the company and the subcontractors working at your home. This will help ensure there is adequate protection for you in case an installer is injured while working on your property. Also be aware that when a company uses subcontractors for installation, the installer can place a lien on your home if they have a dispute with the company and are not fully paid, even though you have fully paid the company. It is always safer to buy from a company that employs its own installers, not subcontractors.
How are they paid?
Always ask how a company’s installers are paid; per hour or by piecework (per square foot, per frame, etc.). Installers paid by piecework often pay less attention to detail, workmanship, safety and being tidy because they can make more money by working quickly. You can avoid potential problems by using companies who employ hourly paid installers.
• Were the installers prompt, neatly dressed, professional and courteous?
• Did the installers make an effort to be neat and did they clean up properly after they were finished?
• Did the installers respect your property, i.e., wear protective shoe covers, use drop sheets to protect flooring and work carefully around furniture and walls?
• Did the installers communicate daily to inform you of the job’s status and answer any questions you had?
If a company uses subcontractors, it may be harder to get an accurate answer to the above questions as most subcontractors work for more than one company.
In summary, the installation of your replacement windows and doors is very important. Professional installers can maximize the performance of your new windows and doors and help ensure you have a good, worry-free renovation experience.
