Spring is finally here, and you’re looking forward to letting some sunshine and fresh air into your home. It’s been a long winter, and you can’t wait to open up the house to the spring and summer weather. It’s finally time to break out of quarantine and soak up the outdoors, which means that it’s also time for some serious spring-cleaning.
With the winter’s endless stormy and wet weather, the exterior of your home can take a real beating. Sometimes the aggressive weather, such as snow, rain, and ice, can cause damage to your home’s surface and windows. Walk around your house to inspect its condition. You may be surprised at the build-up of grime and dirt on the windows. You may even notice a crack or two due to powerful winds or freezing temperatures.
Before tackling any spring home improvement, consult with Toronto window professionals to guide you in the right direction. We’re Casa Bella Windows & Doors, and we’ve been in this business for nearly 60 years. It’s safe to say that we know a thing or two about cleaning and repairing windows. As a manufacturing and installation company, we want our products to provide long-lasting support and comfort to all of our clients, and we love to offer maintenance tips this time of year.
The transition between winter and spring is exciting, but you also want to ensure that your home is in excellent condition. Heading into spring is almost like waking up from a long nap — it’s a bit disorienting waking up from being asleep for so long! But we’re here to give your home a fresh look for spring and help you prepare your windows after the winter hibernation.
Cleaning Essentials
Consider a little DIY (Do It Yourself) window washing to give your home a fresh look for spring. Look for broken seals or cracks. Broken seals and gaps in windows allow cold air to flow inside during the colder seasons and hot air during the warmer months. You’ll end up paying a larger utility bill because you’ll crank up the furnace or AC to make up for all of that escaped air. If they’re relatively small, you can fix them yourself. However, if the damage is significant, it’s worth having a professional look at the issue.
Warm Water Washing
You don’t need any fancy gadgets to get your windows clean and sparkling. All you need is a sponge, cloth, microfiber cloth, a squeegee, and some soapy water. Wet the windows with your sponge or cloth, use the squeegee to wash them, and finish off by drying them with the excess water with the microfiber cloth. If your house has several stories, you may also need a ladder (and excellent balance) to reach those higher levels.
To clean the screens, remove them and wash them with a soft-bristled brush and warm, soapy water. Let them dry entirely before you place the screens back on the frames.
Watching for Winter Damage
While cleaning your windows with soap and water is an effective way to wash away the stormy weather remnants, there are also common winter window problems to spot when you begin your spring clean-up. You don’t even have to go outside to notice such problems. For example, do you notice drafts coming from the windows? Or, do you see condensation forming in-between your windowpanes? There is also the possibility of wood rot. Your wooden frames may have taken a little too much moisture, resulting in rotting that will need immediate repair. Such problems aren’t DIY fixable.
Window drafts, wood rot, and condensation are typically signs that your windows need replacements. The damage is too severe. Maybe your windows are old or weren’t installed properly. Whatever led to the loss, it’s time to refresh your house with new windows.
