With ongoing research and development initiatives, we are constantly seeking ways to improve our products with a variety of factors in mind including environmental ones.
If you are interested in saving money and the environment, here are some tips that you can put to use at home.
1. Update your windows
Lower your hydro bill with energy efficient windows that are specifically designed with Canadian winters and summers in mind. We offer a number of window styles including casement, awning, simulated single hung, horizontal slider, bay and bow, and specialty which comes in a variety of different customizable shapes.
Our windows are energy star rated and made with sturdy vinyl frames that are fusion-welded with advanced weather stripping to keep the elements out. They are also designed with a multi-hollow chamber and are sealed with Super Spacer® foam for advanced insulation values.
2. Replace your light bulbs
Replacing your old incandescent light bulbs with newer halogen incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), or light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs), can lower your electricity use anywhere from 25 to 80 percent. These newer models also last 3 to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs, meaning that the higher upfront costs are well worth the investment.
3. Upgrade to a tankless water heater
Traditional water heaters work by constantly heating and storing water in a tank, that way hot water will always be available when required. This means that energy is constantly being used to heat your home’s water even when you’re not using it. To prevent standby heat loss there are now tankless water heaters that will heat your water only when required (also called on-demand water heaters). These are great solutions for smaller families where there won’t be too many people using hot water all at once.
4. Make the switch to smart power strips
Even when you’re not using your appliances, computers, phone chargers, etc., they will still use electricity if they are kept plugged in. Sources say that this standby power loss can account for 5 to 10 percent of an average household’s energy consumption, and even more surprisingly, about 1 percent of worldwide carbon dioxide emissions.
To remedy this situation you can get yourself a smart power strip that will monitor the energy use of what’s plugged into it and shut off certain outlets when needed. For instance, if your computer goes into standby mode, the smart strip will detect the drop in power consumption and then cut off its supply. The rest of the items plugged into the bar remain unchanged (unless they too go into standby mode).
